Learning Today, Leading Tomorrow

Save the Slum Initiative (STSI) believes that education is more than schooling it is a lifeline that gives children hope, dignity, and the chance to imagine a better future. In communities across Nigeria where poverty, displacement, insecurity, and neglect have pushed learning out of reach, STSI works alongside families and local leaders to ensure that children are not forgotten.

In overcrowded slums, remote rural areas, and communities affected by conflict, many children grow up without safe places to learn. School buildings are damaged or missing, teachers are overstretched, and families struggle to meet basic needs. As a result, children are often forced into child labour, early marriage, or life on the streets. STSI responds by creating opportunities for learning that are safe, inclusive, and welcoming places where children can feel protected, supported, and valued.

STSI’s approach to education is broad and holistic. The organization helps children return to learning through enrolment and back-to-school efforts, supports alternative and non-formal education for those who cannot yet access formal schools, and strengthens learning environments through teacher support and improved facilities. Equal attention is given to the wellbeing of learners, recognizing that children who have experienced hardship or trauma need care, encouragement, and understanding to learn and grow.

Communities are at the heart of STSI’s work. By engaging parents, caregivers, youth, and traditional and religious leaders, STSI helps build shared responsibility for education and challenges social norms that keep children especially girls and children with disabilities out of school. This community ownership ensures that progress continues long after specific interventions end.

Above all, STSI is driven by a simple but powerful commitment: every child deserves the chance to learn, to be safe, and to reach their full potential. Through inclusive, community-led education efforts, STSI is contributing to stronger families, more resilient communities, and a more hopeful future for Nigeria’s next generation.
